Question:

My cat pees on the bath rug. Why?

Posted by petlover on 08/03/2010
My 3 year old cat keeps peeing on the bath rug. She likes to do that every time. I don't know how to teach her. I had to constantly wash the bath rug.

Now I've completely removed it from the bathroom. If I leave it there, she'll pee on it again.

If I put the rug elsewhere, she doesn't do that.

The 2 litter boxes are kept clean in the bathroom. Why does she do this? What is in her mind?

Thanks for your help.

Does she only urinate on the rug? She doesn't urinate on anything else? If the rug isn't in the bathroom, does she urinate in other places? Is the rug in the same bathroom as the litter box? How often do you scoop/change the litter? Have you changed the litter (i.e. brand) recently? Are there other cats in the household?

The answers to these qustions could provide clues to why she's urinating on the rug.

There is a product called Feliway that you could try spraying on the rug to discourage her urinating fetish.

Good luck, that's a hard one to deal with.

She lives with another little boy cat. There are 2 litter boxes in the bath room. I try to keep them very clean. She urinates on the bath rug and another small rug outside the bathroom.

I will try Feliway. Hopefully it works.

Many cats have a fetish about textures and smells. I had a cat that loved to pee on plastic. Could be that the smell of the rug irresistible, and she can't help herself. Other causes are hateful peeing due to anxiety from other cats or humans, bladder problems, and diabetes. Your cat seems to like/hate the smell of the rug. Is it blue?

I don't think she has health problems. But she seems somehow depressed and anti-social. But I can't let her out. We treat her very well.

She knows it's wrong to pee there as she runs away quickly. But she just can't help herself. My mom's cat has the same problem. Frustrating!

My cat has the same problem. She does this over and over. I'm now very frustrated and don't know what to do.
