Question:

How do I get my 6 month old kitten to sleep through the night

Posted by camakeupgirl on 10/11/2010
My kitten used to slepp through the night, but since I've had him nuetered he seems to sleep throughout the day and then won't sleep much at night. He wants to play and bounces around on my head and brings his tiys into me while I sleep. If I put him in the living room he cries all night and paws at the bedroom door. I usually end up getting out of bed in the early am to try to keep him quiet so my boyfriend can sleep. It's getting really tiresome. He seems to want companionship more than anything, but at 3am I need sleep not to play.

Kittens are very playful and want to play with you. In addition, cats are nocturnal, meaning they're more active at night. As they get older, they can sleep through the night. I also agree with the other comments that getting another cat can be very beneficial...they play more together so that they're more likely to sleep at night. Good luck.

First of all I fully understand your situation. Secondly you don't want to leave him outside as he's just a baby and very playful and wants to be with you all the time.

Nowadays cats are very needy. When my cat was more than 6 months old last year he developed the habit of sleeping with us at night. Otherwise he kept scratching the door. I couldn't keep the door closed.

Now he's 1.5 years old, living with his mom (adopted later to keep him company) and needs to snuggle with me every morning. I can never close the door. He's like a kid. I don't blame him.

I think what you can do is to spend more time playing with him before you go to bed, and/or find another kitten of the same age to keep him company as Dr.Greg suggested. He should not be punished or left alone regardless.

He is
training you to bring him in
rather than stay in his crate.

Is there a place to keep him
and his crate where you can't
hear his siren call

or

You could get another kitten
to keep him company
