| No, she is not too old to be fixed (spayed). There are some concerns with anesthesia because of her age, so her veterinarian should do pre-anesthetic tests to make sure everything is okay. Regarding some of the beneficial effects of spaying, she is too old. For example, some forms of cancer could have been avoided had she been spayed before her first heat cycle. An unspayed female dog, especially of her age, is at increased risk for an infection of her uterus called a pyometra. This can be life-threatening. Fixing a pyometra is a lot more expensive than spaying her before it becomes a problem. |
