There are many useful iPhone apps, but there are many more that are not so useful. That is why we have pet together a series of blog posts to help you cut through the clutter and find the most useful apps. Read the first blog of the series here: Ten iPhone Apps For Every Pet Owner

There are five main categories I looked at when researching practical iPhone apps and have broken the list down accordingly. As they say, safety first, so at the top of the list is a very comprehensive and useful Medical/Emergency app. Next on the list is an app that can help you Find A Service including veterinarians, groomers, and dog parks. The third category is an app that stores all of your pet’s medical and personal information. It can also track things such as weight gain or loss and vaccinations. Training is the fourth category with an app that claims to help you teach your dog a new trick in just ten minutes. Finally, no iPhone app would be complete without a social networking app. The one on this list allows you to find other pet owners in your area and set up play dates to help socialize your pet. It will also help you find dog if he or she becomes lost.

Make sure to read the entire article and look for extras at the bottom.

Medical/Emergency
PetMD is the leading source for pet emergencies. They make about 7 iPhone apps that are animal specific. The pet emergencies line offers one touch information to help you care for an injured or sick pet until professional help is available. The symptoms line lets you enter in your pet’s symptom then runs a search for possible problems. Think WebMD but for pets. PetMD even has an app for pet related medical terms.

Find A Service

I had to give this one to PetMD also. Their Pet Services Finder app not only uses your phone’s GPS to find the closest veterinarian offices, it will also find daycare centers, dog parks, sitters, walkers, emergency clinics, and groomers. The easy to use and understand interface also make this a great choice.

Other options, such as Off Leash by Eukanuba will also work but only find specific services such as dog parks.

Information Log/Tracker

Pet Phone is the top information tracking iPhone app. Record all of your pet’s personal information from name and birthday to chip registration number and allergies. This app will also find vets near you and even create vet appointments. Another useful feature is the weight tracker. Each time your pet is weighed, enter the number in the correct spot and then see a chart of his or her weight over time. The app will alert you when your pet is over or under the target weight.

This app also comes in handy when you go on vacation. You can share the information with a sitter with just a touch or if you are bringing your pet along, you will be sure to have the information just in case anything happens and he or she needs to see a vet in an emergency.

Training

Dog Tricks – Best of 101 Dog Tricks is a great app to help you train your dog. Complete with step-by-step videos and written instructions, this app will ensure you and your dog have some quality training time together.

Social/Networking/Lost Dog

Dog Book wins this category for a couple of reasons. Think of this app as a Facebook for dogs. You can post messages, search for nearby parks, and meet other dog owners. Setting up play dates is encouraged and made easy. The best feature of Dog Book is the Arf Alerts. It is basically a message board for lost or found dogs. If a dog is found, you can take a picture and upload it along with a description of the dog and location all on your phone.

Extra 1: No matter how much I search, I cannot seem to find a pet fashion iPhone app. I am sure pet owners would enjoy one; so if you or someone you know designs apps, think pet fashion.

Extra 2: I know this blog article is all about practical and useful apps for pet owners, but I had to share this one. Chances are if you are a pet owner, you have a sense of humor. FAIL Dogs ($.99) is a very funny app full of pictures that show dogs in strange situations and some text to explain it. If you are familiar with FAIL, then you know how funny they can be. Here is an example:
