Some young toy breed puppies do not regulate their blood sugar very well and they become weak and dizzy.
Older cats and dogs that eat dry food or kibble may send their blood sugar on a roller coaster ride. The grain sends the blood sugar sky high, and then the pancreas secretes a bunch of insulin which causes the blood sugar to dive. The result is that the animal constantly feels hunger and they overeat. That is why so many dogs and cats become obese when they eat dry food with 70% grain. Picture a stack of bread 12 inches high next to a stack of meat 2 inches high. Many animals gain lots of weight on this diet. Dogs and Cats that become obese should eat a “no grain” canned cat food. Dogs may lose weight if the kibble and calories are diluted by pouring warm water on the kibble, or veggies and meat are added to the diet. Cats can be trained to eat more chicken, ham, turkey, tuna, salmon, and anchovies to raise the protein level and decrease the carbohydrate level
