Literally! We had three dogs back then, two boys, Patches and Spanky and one girl named Sheba. Well Sheba was having her first heat and the boys were restless; I was so surprised at Paddy because he had never shone any interest in Sheba or any other dog. Sheba, being in heat seemed to wake up the old boy of 10 yrs.
Spanky was a young dog and was not acting that bad, but I had to separate my girl from them nevertheless. When we retired to my room, Paddy went crazy scratching at the door and whining up a storm; this was getting on my nerves as this was not just at night but all of the time.
Finally after getting tired of shielding Sheba from the boy pack, I called my vet to see what he could do to settle down the old boy; he suggested that he be mildly sedated and since this was her first heat, and I was not going to mate her but instead have her spayed. Well I gave my Paddy the pills and hoped for the best because he had disrupted the whole household and he was just too old.
After all, even though me and Paddy did not get along, I still did not want him to suffer any kind of anxiety (believe it or not). So after her first heat all was well once again, no more heavy panting or scratching at the door or whining day and night. Yes indeed, sedate the dog!
