Puppies get into everything! Before you bring home the newest member of the family, take a walk around the house and pick up anything the puppy might get into. Check for plugs because puppy will chew them! Pick up pillows, paper such as a newspaper, children’s toys, other dog or cat toys. It might be a good idea to secure an older pet before meeting the new one. It is a bit overwhelming and a lot for the puppy to take in all at once! A new home, new family and an older pet. Introduce them to each other a little at a time and the puppy won’t be so overwhelmed.
A bathroom is usually a good idea for a new place for the puppy to hang out for a while or just until he or she gets used to everyone and the other animals. Place newspaper down on the floor and bowl for water. It is not a good idea to leave puppy food lying around as the puppy can overeat and get chubby. It is not very good for their digestive systems either. Put a toy or two and a blanket down for the puppy to sleep. If the puppy cries, put a ticking clock near the puppy and the noise should make him or her sleep. Check in on the puppy once in a while and continue to take the puppy outside for walks. After a few days the puppy should be able to see his or her new environment.
A new puppy is great is great company and a wonderful companion but training a puppy is work. House training a puppy takes time and praise. Walk the puppy after sleep times, after extreme excitement, playtime, drinking water and eating, and if the puppy starts sniffing around the house is a good indication that a walk is in good order. These are all good times to take the puppy outside. Praise the puppy after business is finished. Try and get the puppy on a bathroom schedule that is good for you and the puppy. Do not take him out haphazardly; in other words, do not sleep in one day and not the next day. A bathroom schedule must be regular every day. If you work maybe a dog walker might be the ticket to keep your puppy on the correct schedule that you and he or she created together. Remember, love the puppy and the puppy will love you.
