Molly is a little bit of everything.  She's got the black tongue and curled tail of  a Chow, her head looks like a lab, she's got floppy long ears and weighs 35 lbs.  She's just a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

I first met Molly while I was walking Hannah.  She came running over and followed us everywhere we went.  She followed us on many occasions following that day, always full of boundless energy and a need for attention.  One day, I allowed her to follow us home and I fed her.  I knew I would have to return her to her owners, but something just didn't feel right.

As we approached her home a man came out.  Molly started pulling back and I could read very well that she was afraid of this man.  He came racing over, grabbed the leash out of my hands and smacked her right across her face!

Long story short, I paid this man to take her away from him and the abuse she had suffered.

It's been two years since that awful day and Molly is a wonderful, warm and sweet puppy.  It took patience and understanding to get her over the fear of being struck. As time went by, she learned to trust again.

If you do take home an animal that has been abused, patience is going to be the biggest key to winning their trust.

Training an abused animal is different because they have never known how to trust.

When interacting, kneel down so you are on the same eye level. Your height is frightening and quite overpowering.

Always speak in a cheerful, soft voice.  Loud shrieking voices will only send this animal into total terror.

When approaching him for praise, stay clear of his head.  Many times their faces and heads are the target of their past abuse. Try petting under the chin or chest with your palms up. These are calming spots and your hands are in a least threatening position.

If he pulls away, let him.  Let him come to you first.  If he only makes it half way, place a treat near him and give him praise.  Speaking softly, let him know it's OK.

Just like people, trust is earned, it's not a given. Over time trust will grow and you will have an amazing, loving pet that will love you unconditionally.

Molly:

I never did know what her name was before, I named her Molly, she took to this new name and this new journey very well.  I am so very grateful that she is a part of my life.
