During the months of August, September, and October, 50 shelters across the country will compete to save the lives of at least 300 animals per shelter. The shelters that qualified need to save the lives of at least 300 pets during these three months more than they saved last year during the same time.
Saving the lives of pets includes more than adoption. Being able to return lost pets to their owners, rescuing pets from harmful situations or abusing homes, or adopting them to good homes qualify for this challenge.
The Challenge
The ASPCA put forth the challenge to save more animal lives than ever before. In order for the 50 shelters to qualify to participate in the challenge, they had to get at least 6,500 votes on the ASPCA website. The top fifty shelters are in the running to win the top prize of $100K. Second place prize is $25K with smaller prizes for third place and regional winners.
In order to win, the top shelter has to save the lives of at least 300 more pets during the months of August, September, and October of 2011 than the same months of 2010.
The Cause
Why did the ASPCA decide to run this contest? According to their website:
We know that energetic and innovative programs for getting more cats and dogs returned
to owners or adopted into loving homes are being developed in shelters like yours all across the country. We wanted to tap into that collective genius, identifying and rewarding the best of the best.
As social media continues to grow as a marketing tool and raises awareness for good causes, more nonprofits and businesses are realizing the potential. They know that more people will get involved, allowing them to raise the bar while limiting the contestants to 50.
