There is just no getting around the fact that most of us must leave the comfort of our homes, along with our pets, to go to work everyday. This often causes separation anxiety, both for the pet owner and the pet. Do you sit at work all day wondering what your pet is up to? Do you worry that he/she is lonely, or getting into mischief, or even stuff that may harm them?
Many pet lovers view their pets as their children, so it's no wonder there is worry involved when they have to leave their kid at home alone. For a bit of humor about the subject, i-pet.com has a great gallery of funny images of what your pet might be up to while you are gone.
But for most pet owners this is not a funny situation.
The stark reality is that the majority of folks can't afford to hire a sitter for their pet while they work, nor can they afford a daily kennel. So what is the solution? How can you ease the anxiety caused by having to leave your pet alone for long stretches of time? Here is a nice article with suggestions for what to do about your pet being home alone, such as vigorous exercise before you leave for work, having a neighbor check on them during the day, and several other very helpful ideas. Another idea is to call home several times a day, wait for the answering machine to kick in and talk to your pet, (saw this in a movie!)
If you don't have a pet but are considering getting one and you work, read this great article about the best dog breeds for busy people. The bottom line is that there is absolutely no perfect solution to the problem of having to leave your pet alone while you are at work, but with a bit of humor, some ingenuity and a heart filled with love and good intentions you can figure out a solution that will work for both you and your pet.
