Contrary to pop cultural belief, it is entirely possible for a dog to become friends with a cat, and vice versa. However, first impressions are very important, and without a proper introduction, things can go very badly. Here are some tips to make the initial canine/feline meetings go smoothly.
Keep the dog leashed early on. Obedience training is a definite plus, but at the very least they should be kept fettered if they try to chase the cat. Only when the animals seem reasonably comfortable around each other should you remove the dog’s leash.
Keep the cat confined to a single room in the first couple of days. This will give the cat the distance they need to feel (or at least stay) secure, while the two animals get used to each others’ sounds and smells.
After a couple days of separation, open the door for the dog. Keep them on the leash, and order them to sit and stay if they try to chase the cat. If the dog is obedient and does not try to chase, reward them with treats and praise.
Allow the cat escape routes through which the dog cannot follow. Putting up barriers in strategic locations will impede the dog, but a cat should have no problem climbing over them to safety.
Be patient. Though friendship is possible and ultimately worthwhile, it is a slow process. It can take weeks or even months, but eventually the animals will learn to accept and enjoy each other’s company.
