It's a fact: dogs look adorable in costumes. The only problem is that most dogs would rather take a trip to the vet than put on some of the things we humans devise for them. But with the proper approach, you'll soon have your dog jumping with joy at the mere sight of a costume.
The trick to getting dogs to dress up is making every experience with the costume a positive one. To start out with, make sure the costume actually fits the dog. Pre-made dog costumes are going to be tight on some dogs, loose on others. Make it fit. If you're making the costume yourself, measure your dog carefully before you start. No matter how much fun he's having, no dog wants to walk around in something it can barely move in.
Slowly train your dog to associate the costume with Good Things. To do this, put a few treats in your pocket, get out the costume, and call the dog. When he comes, don't put the costume on -- just run it over his back and legs while making a fuss over him. Then, give him a treat. Do this for several days until the dog begins to anticipate the treats.
Now it's time to graduate to actually wearing the costume. Using plenty of treats and encouragement, put the costume on the dog. It helps if the training costume doesn't have too many holes and buckles to fasten. Once the costume is on, hand out another treat and immediately embark on a fun activity like riding in the car or going for a nice walk.
Soon, your dog will understand that costumes aren't cruel -- they're a gateway to fun.
