Since the beginning of social media, there have been a number of blogs and Facebook and twitter accounts written in the voice of an animal. Perhaps one of the most entertaining is Bo Knows Online, the blog written in the voice of Bo Hoefinger, an adopted mutt with a great sense of humor.
Bo’s blog has become so popular, in fact, that he even decided to write a book, Bad to the Bone: Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger. The book came out on October 1, 2009 on Amazon and bookstores throughout the world. Some words that have been used to describe the book include witty, laugh out loud funny, well written, and side splitting.
Bo’s ‘father’ is the human behind the mutt, helping him record his memories and encounters. Bo’s accounts of his family are very funny. From his not very handy father, to his not such a great cook mother, a Rhodesian ridgeback friend, and especially his chronically constipated housemate, a cat named Moose.
Here is a sample of Bo’s writing. It is an excerpt from his bio on the website:
“I'm 1'10" and weigh 63 lbs, and although I'm a mutt on the outside, I'm a purebred on the inside. My good nature comes from the Golden Retriever side of the family, while my stubbornness is clearly from my Chowchow bloodlines. I've got Rastafarian ears, a black tongue for licking, and paws that should be on a dog twice my size.”
Bo can type 60 words a minute and claims he was a shelter reject before becoming a beloved family pet. He routinely comes across very interesting stories that he shares on his blog, Bo knows Online. For example, “Kung Fu Kitty” is about 19-year old cat that has allegedly started attacking mail carriers, which led to a mail delivery suspension to the owner’s home. At the end of the entry, Bo states, “I think this is a cat I can be pals with.”
Most blog entries follow a similar style and pattern. First Bo writes a paragraph or two about himself, which leads into the main story of the post. Then there is usually a quote from the original story, and finally Bo concludes the post with some humor.
Bo’s blog is updated regularly with new material, while his book took about three years to write. Happily, the book reviews have been very positive. Bad to the Bone is filled with fun charts, photos, and lists that will make the reader laugh while getting to know Bo and his family. Here is a quick example of a “Q and A with the Author” section:
Q: If you had a gun with two bullets in it and were confronted by Michael Vick, Sylvester the Cat and Tweety Bird, whom would you shoot?
B: I'd shoot Michael Vick, twice.
As the reader gets to know Bo Hoefinger while reading the book and blog entries, he or she will realize how funny, charming, well read, stubborn, lovable, and smart this dog really is. Dog owners will gain new insights into the mind of their companion. Unlike other books in this category, such as Marley & Me, this one has a happy ending and will make the reader forget it was written from a dog’s point of view.
